Austria
Austria, in the heart of the Alps, is a classic European mineral country — the home of fine Alpine-cleft minerals and historic localities.
About Austriaextended article
Austria's Alps are a classic region for 'Alpine cleft' minerals — crystals grown in fissures deep in the mountains — and home to the historic Habachtal emerald deposit.
Alpine clefts
Across the Austrian Alps, mineral-rich fluids crystallised in open fissures (clefts) to grow superb quartz, epidote and other species. The Knappenwand locality in the Untersulzbachtal produced what are widely regarded as the world's finest epidote crystals.
Signature minerals
Austria is famous for Alpine-cleft quartz, dark green epidote (Knappenwand), titanite and fluorite, and for the green Habachtal emerald — Europe's classic emerald source. Alpine specimens are treasured for their clarity and form.
