About Volynextended article

Ukraine's great chamber pegmatites

The Volyn pegmatite field, in the Korosten pluton of north-western Ukraine, is celebrated for its large miarolitic "chamber" pockets. These cavities have produced superb sherry-yellow and blue topaz, golden beryl (heliodor), jet-black morion (smoky quartz), and fluorite.

What collectors look for

Sharp gemmy topaz, heliodor beryl, and large lustrous morion crystals — often as floaters from the open pockets — are the signature Volyn specimens.
