About this specimen
Brown to amber garnet crystals sit within a dark, mottled matrix, accompanied by a larger pale calcite crystal at one side. Several garnets show broad reflective faces, with warm orange-brown areas visible between the darker patches of the base.
The calcite forms a light-colored end to the otherwise mostly brown and black composition. Smaller garnets are embedded around the face rather than arranged in one even row. This Yunxiao association offers a clear contrast between glossy darker crystals, rough matrix and a comparatively smooth pale companion.
Locality: Yunxiao, Fujian, China. Weight: 80 g (2.82 oz). Dimensions: 5 × 2.5 × 4 cm (50 × 25 × 40 mm; 1.97 × 0.98 × 1.57 in).
